Amid India-Canada Diplomatic Rift, Justin Trudeau’s “Khalistani” Backpedal

As the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada continues, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has admitted for the first time the presence of Khalistanis in his country. In an unexpected statement, Trudeau acknowledged the presence of a Khalistan support base within Canada but quickly added that they do not represent the Sikh community as a whole. His remark came during a Diwali celebrations event at Ottawa’s Parliament Hill.  Relations between India and Canada have deteriorated since the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist, outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, in June 2023. Alexander Rogers (20), a third-year studying materials science at Corpus Christi College, took his own life in January earlier this year, after being ‘ostracised’ by his peers, according to a report in The Telegraph. Following two-day inquest proceedings at Oxford Coroner’s Court, coroner Nicholas Graham concluded that the ostracisation “led him to form an intention to take his own life”. The final report added that Rogers was “distraught” that his friends shunned him following an unreported allegation.
