Los Angeles Wildfires Latest Updates: Los Angeles is in the grip of a wildfire catastrophe as the Palisades and Eaton fires continue to spread rapidly, claiming lives and destroying homes. At least 11 people have been confirmed dead, with 13 others reported missing, as at least two of the largest wildfires remain largely uncontained, according to latest reports.

In total, over 35,000 acres have been scorched, with more than 12,000 structures reduced to ash. Firefighters are battling around the clock to contain the flames, while cadaver dogs search through rubble for victims in what is now the most destructive wildfire in the city’s history. Residents across Los Angeles have been ordered to evacuate, and contamination from the fires has closed several beaches, media reports said.

Where Are The Wildfires Still Burning?

Efforts to combat the wildfires are concentrated on the Palisades and Eaton fires, which together account for the majority of the devastation:

Palisades: This inferno has ravaged over 22,660 acres, including parts of Pacific Palisades and Brentwood. Overnight, it grew by 1,000 acres despite partial containment efforts. Firefighters are working to protect landmarks like the Getty Center and nearby neighbourhoods, according to a BBC report.

Eaton: Blazing through northern Los Angeles, including Altadena, this fire has consumed nearly 14,000 acres and is 15% contained. Its toll includes over 7,000 destroyed structures, the report said.

Smaller fires, such as the Hurst and Kenneth fires, are nearing containment, with 76% and 80% control, respectively. The Archer, Sunset, Lidia, Woodley, and Olivas fires are said to have been fully contained.

What Caused The LA Wildfires?

According to NASA and climate experts, the devastating fires are the result of a combination of dry weather and seasonal winds. Southern California has seen negligible rainfall since October, marking the driest start to a water year on record. Climate scientist Daniel Swain noted that these extreme conditions, coupled with the Santa Ana winds, created a perfect storm for wildfires.

On January 10, astronaut Don Pettit shared two images of the wildfires captured from the International Space Station.
