Gujarat Reports Fourth Case Of HMPV As 9-Month-Old Tests Positive In Ahmedabad

A nine-month-old child in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad tested postive for human metapneumovirus (HMPV), taking the total number of cases in the state to four. All the four cases have been reported here in less than a week.

According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the baby boy was admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad on January 6 with a cold, cough, and difficulty in breathing. He does not have any travel history, news agency PTI reported.

Prior to this, an eight-year-old boy from Sabarkantha district on Friday was confirmed to be HMPV positive. This was the third case in the state. Two days back, an 80-year-old man also tested positive for the viral infection in the city. He is currently being treated at a private hospital and has been suffering from asthma.

The first case of HMPV in Gujarat was reported on January 6, when a two-month-old boy from Rajasthan tested positive with the viral disease. He was discharged after being treated at a hospital in Ahmedabad.

Discovered in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family. The viral infection has symptoms like fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, and cough. It is closely related to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus. The infection spreads through respiratory droplets from sneezing or coughing as well as by touching contaminated surfaces. Additionally, coming into direct contact with infected individuals can also spread the virus.

The infant was admitted to the state-run hospital with cold-related symptoms four days ago, AMCH Superintendent Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan said. However, the HMPV infection was only confirmed on Friday after test reports from Lahowal-based ICMR-RMRC turned out to be positive for infection.

”The samples are sent to the Indian Council of Medical Research for tests in influenza and flu-related cases as a routine practice,” Bhuyan added.
