The central government on Friday announced an increase in the minimum support price (MSP) for copra for the 2025 season. The decision regarding this was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The new MSP has been fixed at Rs 11,582 per quintal for milling copra and Rs 12,100 per quintal for ball copra, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. Earlier, the MSP for milling copra was Rs 5250 per quintal and Rs 5500 for ball copra in the 2014 season. With the Centre’s nod, the increased MSP has registered a growth of 121 and 120 percent for milling and ball copra, respectively.

”Copra production in our country is highest in Karnataka with a share of 32 per cent, followed by Tamil Nadu with 25 per cent, Kerala with 25 per cent, and Andhra Pradesh with 7.7 per cent.
”PM Modi and the NDA government have worked with great dedication and a spirit of commitment towards farmers. A significant decision has been taken for farmers today. The price policy for the ‘Copra’, covering all five states in the South, has been approved for 2025,” he added.

The MSP, which has been decided as per the recommendations by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), is for the fair and average quality of milling and ball copra varieties.

The union minister stated the MSP has been fixed at 50 per cent higher than the cost of production. The total financial implication of this decision would be Rs 855 crore.

The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation (NCCF) will however continue to be the central nodal agencies for the procurement of copra and de-husked coconut under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).

”A higher MSP will not only ensure better remunerative returns to the coconut growers but also incentivise farmers to expand copra production to meet the growing demand for coconut products both domestically and internationally,” a statement issued by the Centre read.

The copra season in India typically begins around January and lasts till April.
