Prime Minister’s Museum and Library has requested Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to return the letters written by Jawaharlal Nehru to Lady Mountbatten, Jayprakash Narayan, among others, allegedly withdrawn at Sonia Gandhi’s orders in 2008.

Rahul Gandhi has been approached after there was no response from Sonia Gandhi, Rizwan Kadri, a member of PMML told ANI.

”Since no response was received from her, I have requested the leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi to help in getting these materials restored. I have also urged him to consider that these documents are part of the nation’s heritage and an important aspect of its history,” he said.

”Until we can view these materials, we cannot determine the reasons for their withdrawal. There must have been some objectionable content for them to have been removed,” he added.

The collection of letters includes exchanges between Nehru and Lady Mountbatten, as well as with Govind Ballabh Pant and Jayprakash Narayan, Kadri said.

The PMML member further said a formal request was made to Sonia Gandhi in September this year regarding 51 cartoons from around eight different sections of the Nehru collection at the PMML. However, there was no response to the request.

The Bharatiya Janata Party was quick to corner the Congress over the issue and questioned the alleged withdrawal of the letters from public space.

Taking to X, BJP MP Sambit Patra said, “This is intriguing!
From What’s today the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library & formerly Nehru Museum and Library, the then UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi took away 51 cartoons of letters written by Nehru to various personalities including “EDWINA MOUNTBATTEN”!”

”What intrigues me is what would have Nehru ji written to EDWINA MOUNTBATTEN that needed censoring and will LOP Rahul help to get back the letters between,” he added.
