AAP MLA Naresh Balyan, arrested on Saturday in connection with a year-old extortion case and his alleged ties to a gangster, will be presented before a Delhi court on Sunday. The Delhi Police’s crime branch may request police remand for further questioning. Balyan, who represents Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, was apprehended just hours after the BJP released an audio clip in which the MLA appeared to instruct gangster Kapil Sangwan, also known as Nandu, to threaten and extort a Delhi-based builder and others. The crime branch had obtained a recording of a conversation with Nandu, who fled India and is believed to be in London. Initially detained for questioning at the crime branch’s RK Puram office in South Delhi, Balyan was later arrested. Sources within the crime branch revealed that Balyan’s arrest followed his lack of cooperation during the questioning process. During a press conference, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia accused Balyan of engaging in criminal activities with the approval of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal. Bhatia also demanded that the MLA be suspended. The BJP shared the alleged audio, claiming that Balyan, after being blackmailed by the gangster, eventually revealed compromising information about himself.
