<p><strong>Heavy Rain Alert: </strong>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh as a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal has moved towards the west-northwest at a speed of 12 kmph. As of Wednesday morning, the system is positioned about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai, with further movement expected to impact coastal areas soon.</p>
<p>According to IMD, “The depression over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the 16th October 2024 over the same region &nbsp;near latitude 12.1&deg; N and longitude 83.4&deg; E, about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 390 km east of Puducherry and 450 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh).”</p>
<p>”It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu – South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of 17th October,” it said.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Heavy Rainfall Forecast</h3>
<p>The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, with isolated areas expected to experience extremely heavy downpours. Coastal Andhra Pradesh is also bracing for significant rainfall, particularly in districts such as Nellore, Chittoor, and Tirupati.</p>
<p>In Andhra Pradesh, the temple town of Tirumala has already been hit with heavy rains since last night, leading to difficulties for devotees. A red alert has been issued for Tirupati, Chittoor, and Nellore, with schools and educational institutions in Tirupati and Chittoor closed for two days as a precautionary measure.</p>

<p>On October 16, light to moderate rainfall is expected across most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated spots in North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. <br /><br />On October 17, isolated areas in North Interior Tamil Nadu may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. South Tamil Nadu is likely to see light to moderate rainfall in most places, with heavy rainfall at isolated spots from October 16 to 17.</p>
<h3>South Andhra Pradesh &amp; Rayalaseema:</h3>
<p>On October 16, light to moderate rainfall is expected in most areas, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated spots. Isolated heavy rainfall is also expected on October 17.</p>
