Decide On 50% Women’s Reservation Within 3 Weeks: High Court Tells DU

<p>The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Delhi University (DU) vice-chancellor to decide on a representation seeking 50% reservation for women in the upcoming Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections within three weeks.</p>
<p>A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela after hearing the petition, said that the VC should decide on the representation seeking 50% reresentation for women in DUSU Polls expeditiously, preferably within three weeks.</p>
<p>The bench noted the the petitioner had given the representation to the university in October 2023.</p>
<p>Petitioner Shabana Hussain had approached the court contending that the DUSU polls were heavily influenced by money and muscle, which adversly impacted the participation of women in the elections.</p>
<p>Hussain approached the court seeking a direction for 50% reservation for women in the DUSU polls scheduled for September 27.</p>
<p>The court was told that the nomination process for the elections is scheduled to begin on September 17.</p>
<p>The high court was told that the reservation was needed to ensure gender equality in student elections. The plea sought a direction to the varsity to comply with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations of 2006.</p>
