USAID Funding Freeze Creates Humanitarian Crisis in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa: The suspension of U.S. aid to Ethiopia has had a devastating impact on the country’s most vulnerable populations, disrupting food supply chains and essential humanitarian programs. The funding freeze, imposed by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) over concerns of aid mismanagement, has left millions without crucial assistance.

Ethiopia, which has been struggling with ongoing ethnic conflicts and a severe drought, relied heavily on U.S. humanitarian aid. The sudden withdrawal of funds has forced many NGOs to scale back their operations, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

Local organizations have urged the U.S. government to reconsider its decision, warning that the aid suspension could lead to mass starvation and instability. However, Washington insists that reforms in aid distribution are necessary before funding can be restored.

The Ethiopian government has accused the U.S. of using aid as a political tool and is seeking alternative sources of humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, the United Nations and other international agencies are exploring ways to fill the gap left by USAID’s withdrawal.
