In addition to Madurai, Jallikattu was celebrated grandly in Sooriyur near Tiruchirappalli, where young men competed fiercely to tame the bulls. Out of 600 participants, 21 bulls and 42 contestants were disqualified for violating the rules.

Despite the festivities, the event witnessed a tragic moment when a bull collided with another in the arena. The injured bull succumbed to its injuries before reaching the hospital, leaving its owners devastated.

A heavy police presence of 2,500 personnel ensured the smooth conduct of the event, which continues to be a symbol of Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage and valor.

Jallikattu, a traditional bull-taming sport, is celebrated in Tamil Nadu, as part of the harvest festival Pongal, particularly on the Mattu Pongal. This ancient practice is deeply ingrained in Tamil culture and history with references in Tamil literature like the Silappatikaram dating back over 2,500 years.

Initially, Jallikattu served as a platform to demonstrate the strength and virility of bulls, often selected for breeding. Today, it stands as a proud symbol of Tamil heritage and cultural identity.
