Karnataka BJP leaders have raised concerns over the recent surrender of six Naxals and alleged that the state government has compromised with the ultras rather than enforcing law and order. The criticism follows the surrender of Naxals without weapons at Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s office on Wednesday (January 8).

Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, expressed doubts about the surrender, questioning how the Naxals, who had evaded capture for years, were suddenly located. ”The Naxals have not surrendered to the government. Instead, the government has surrendered to the Naxals. How were these Naxals, who had remained elusive for so many years, suddenly found?” he claimed, as per IANS.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai questioned the Chief Minister’s direct involvement in the surrender process which traditionally occurs at the district level under the supervision of the District Collector and Superintendent of Police. He said, “The encounter with Vikram Gowda has created a lot of ruckus, especially on the integrity of the encounter followed by the process of surrender where the CM himself seems to be directly involved in it. Earlier when the surrender of Naxals happened, it happened under the District collector and District SP at the local level. This time, the CM directly getting involved raises many serious questions… It is for the government to clarify whether there is an internal fight between the Naxals, whether the outside naxals have influenced the government to do this.”

Further, BJP National General Secretary CT Ravi emphasised the need for a thorough investigation into the surrender. “Did the Naxalites share the information that who helped them and who provided them weapons?…If the package has been provided after getting all this information, then it is fine or else it will create problems for everyone. The Naxalites are the people who do not have faith in the ballot, they have faith in the bullet,” he warned.

Meanwhile, Karnataka police tracked a cache of weapons belonging to the surrendered Naxals in the Meguru forest of Chikkamagaluru district. The recovered arms reportedly include AK-56 rifles, revolvers, pistols, and live bullets. However, the lack of an official statement on the discovery has fueled further criticism from the BJP.
