Chennai: Patient Dies At Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, Kin Protest Alleging ‘Medical Negligence’

Amid controversy surrounding the attack of a doctor at Kalaignar Centenary Super-Speciality Hospital in Guindy, another protest broke out on Friday as the family of a deceased patient alleged medical negligence. The protests followed the death of Vignesh, a man admitted to the government hospital on Wednesday after being transferred from a private facility.

The family accused the hospital staff of failing to provide timely care. They claimed that after Vignesh was admitted to a normal ward on Wednesday, no doctor checked his vitals or provided adequate attention, as reported by DT Next. According to them, he developed breathing difficulties and was rushed to the emergency ward, where he was intubated. However, they alleged no further action was taken to stabilise his condition.

On Friday, Vignesh reportedly suffered a heart attack and passed away. His relatives gathered at the hospital, accusing the staff of negligence and engaging in heated arguments with them.

A senior doctor at the hospital reportedly said that Vignesh had been admitted in critical condition with renal failure and severe pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas, reported The New Indian Express. The doctor also mentioned that the full medical report of the case had been sent to the government. Further investigations are underway.

Doctors’ Strike Following Attack On Oncologist

The incident occurred as the hospital was already grappling with limited operations due to a doctors’ strike. The strike was called after an oncologist was stabbed multiple times by a youth on November 13, who accused the doctor of negligence in his mother’s treatment. The attack prompted the doctors to halt non-essential services on Wednesday and Thursday, severely impacting hospital operations.

Though essential services resumed, the tension continues to prevail at the hospital.
